Looking Up With The Alexander Technique

Do you ever notice what you’re  looking at when you’re walking?

You might notice that your gaze is down, perhaps five or six feet in front of you. Note your thought patterns when you are looking down at this steep angle. Maybe you’ll notice that you’re worrying about something, or replaying a past event or projecting into the future. In other words you may not be in the present moment. One of the beautiful aspects of the Alexander Technique is that you always practice it in the present moment. See what happens as you direct your gaze farther up than your habit. Notice if there’s a change in attitude.

Notice if things are ‘looking up.’ Notice if you’re now more in the present moment. Is there a little less collapsing and a little more lengthening, especially in the front of the torso? Is there lengthening through your upper chest and the front of your neck?

Notice a change in your your breathing, your mood, and a little release of tension around the corners of your mouth. Allow a slight smile to occur, even if there’s nothing in particular to smile at. Notice if things are looking up.
