I was happy to be asked by New York Magazine to write a few Alexander Technique tips. The Alexander Technique tips were to be included as one of the steps in an article entitled: ’50 Steps To Simple Happiness.’ New York Magazine wanted me to give a few instructions about the Alexander Technique, and when to ‘do’ the Alexander Technique. Yikes… When to do the Alexander Technique? When not to do the Alexander Technique would save space!
The Alexander Technique isn’t something you do at certain times, say from 7 to 8 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Alexander Technique is more like how you walk, how you stand, and how you move. The Alexander Technique teaches you how to relieve your own back pain, neck pain, how to fix your computer posture, and improve your posture in general. The Alexander Technique works because it deals with how to live your life in a way so as to create more ease and less back pain and neck pain.
New York Magazine only alloted me a few sentences, including answering the “When to do the Alexander Technique” question. They changed one word I wrote. I wrote: “Allow your neck to free”. They changed it to: “Allow your neck to relax.”
Anyway, my Alexander Technique is tip #49 (just made it!) The full link to the New York Magazine article is HERE.
Here is the Alexander Technique tip the way it appears in New York Magazine:
#49. “Pause. Allow your neck to relax, your nose to slowly lower, and the crown of your head to rise. Release your whole spine into length. Notice extra tension and release it. Breathe fully and slowly; smile. Begin your morning with this, end with it, use it as many times during the day as possible.”
