Alexander Technique NeckPrior to Alexander Technique lessons and moving towards an Alexander Technique neck, I had a pain in the neck called a “vibes neck”. What’s a vibes neck? It’s what you do with your neck when you play an instrument called the vibes; you tighten it.

The vibes, short for vibraphone, is played with mallets, and while you’re way up here…the vibes are way down…

here.

Your neck pokes forward and downward, adding tension and compression.

Neck and Neck

There have always been various (Blank) necks.

Grunting neck, talking neck, singing neck, chanting neck, shouting neck, hunting neck, log drum neck, scroll neck, tablet neck, cave painting neck, quill neck, pen neck, cell phone neck, blackberry neck, text neck, computer neck, and back to tablet neck.

Make-up neck, combing neck, shaving neck, guitar neck, piano neck, jogging neck, reading neck, TV neck, toothbrushing neck. You-name-it neck.

The object itself is trivial. Blaming the computer for our neck tension is like blaming the cave, the quill, or the log drum.

Future Neck

We rush towards the future. We unthinkingly perceive that we’ll arrive at our destination faster because our face is a few inches in front of the rest of us; similarly when we drive.

As we continually poke our neck forwards towards an event or a thing, we will also poke it forwards towards no-thing. It has become a habit.

Alexander Technique Neck

An Alexander Technique neck lets your head move up. An Alexander Technique neck is loose, free, open, back, up, un-tensed, released, long, uncommitted, soft, and spreading. It spreads to your jaw, your breathing, your torso, limbs, and mood.
