In order to make positive changes in our lives we need to get it deep into the subconscious mind and that’s what this book and the Alexander Technique does. We all have some sort of stress in our lives and this book gives you the tools to apply to lessen that stress. “Free your neck” means so much more than just freeing our neck as it also means to free our jaw and to let the tension go. As I’m writing this I’m actually freeing my neck right now and it’s allowing me to breath more freely. Mark is a great teacher and wrote a great book!

Josefsberg has distilled the principles of the Alexander Technique into a brief, highly enjoyable read. He manages to convey the profundity of the Technique through easy explorations and hilarious stories. It’s not often a scholarly and practically applicable book can also be appreciated for the pleasures of the prose. After closing this book at the end of the final chapter, I felt remarkably well in myself, not being sure whether this was a result of my freer neck or from the hearty laughter I’d gleaned from these delightful pages. Eagerly awaiting the sequel….

I’ve studied Alexander Technique with Mark on & off for many years, so naturally I knew this book would be good. I also suspected that I would enjoy the humor, which I did. It’s a pleasant & easy read… one that I can do over & over again to continually remind me of the many techniques he taught me that improve my posture, my breathing, my attitude, and help keep my life pain free!

I’ve taken Alexander classes in person before but am heavily out of practice. I’m on the author’s newsletter for online classes, but was so excited when this book was announced and it did not disappoint! It’s a slim volume of practical exercises, written in a fun, no-stress way. Alexander is amazing for increasing body awareness, reducing pain, and improving performance in specific tasks. I can’t think of anyone this book wouldn’t be useful for.

If this book were written some time ago-well, a century ago-it would have been called a vademecum-a go with me. Today, we might call it an owner’s manual for the the human body. It explains with clarity and humor that our bearing, our posture, depends on the way our head sits atop the spine, and that by changing our thinking, we can enliven our posture, the whole of ourselves. I’ve found expressions of principles I’ve heard for years come alive, lightened up with spare words and tons of humor. Give this little book a go. Did I mention vademecum?

Reading Mark’s book made me smile. I love the personal and humerous style in which he sets out the principles of the Alexander Technique. He has creatively layered them through each story and lesson. Like a spiral (or a musical composition) each idea is presented and revisited again with a little development. Anyone interested in a lighthearted, yet substantial look at the Alexander Technique will find this little book helpful.
