How To Relieve Stress In A New York Minute With The Alexander Technique

Stressed Out In New York City
The Alexander Technique teaches us how to reduce stress in a New York minute. New York City, or any other large city, can be an extremely stress inducing place to live or work. Although the Alexander Technique may not be able to reduce the stress of NYC, it can certainly help how we react to the stress; the manifestations of the stress. The Alexander Technique helps by giving us more control over ourselves, but this control is not the rigid kind we usually think of. The Alexander Technique type of control leads towards freedom and the lessening of stress and tension. Once we develop awareness and understand the Alexander Technique concepts of inhibition and direction, it becomes a matter of conscious guidance and control. In other words, choice.
Becoming aware of unnecessary stress and tension is an important first step. We can often notice this extra work in our neck and shoulders. We can learn to cultivate the skill of awareness and let go of some of this excess tension immediately. You can try it for yourself right now.
For instance, think of letting go of the muscles in the back of your neck. Just as you can release tension in your biceps, you could release the tension in your neck muscles. Perhaps it would help to gently put your hand on the back of your neck to help you identify these muscles. Tighten your neck purposefully, then let go and feel the difference. Gently let go of your jaw. Let it just dangle, with your lips apart. Then slowly let the lips come together without pressing them together. After a few times you may feel almost as if your mouth is open, but the lips are touching. Let your head rotate slightly forward by lowering your nose, while the crown of your head moves up. The mind affects the body, and the body affects the mind. You may find yourself less stressed as you use your body in a less stressed way. Breathe slowly and fully.

Taking this advice will tell you something about what you’re doing with yourself. If it doesn’t work, you need an Alexander Technique teacher!
An important AT principle: “Motor Sensory Amnesia.” Meaning, when you try doing something to solve a problem, “results may vary.” By using Alexander Technique, you learn to undo what you learned by accident and continue to do without intending it.
Hi Franis,
Yes! And even if you take this advice and it does work, an Alexander Technique teacher is the way to go. Since the Alexander Technique is a hands-on technique, reading about it can only take you so far. It’d be hard to learn to play the cello solely from a book, or a few web postings.

How To Reduce Neck Pain
I have a stiff neck. We say we have a stiff or sore neck, as if someone gave it to us and now it’s ours. In Alexander Technique terms it might be more accurate to say “I’m stiffening my neck.” Of course if you say it that way you sound insane…

Alexander Technique Directions
I wish to free my neck … so that
My head can move forward and up…so that
My torso can lengthen and widen and…
My legs can move away from my torso and…
My shoulders can release out the sides.
Alexander Technique directions act as verbal, or neuro-linguistc cues. They tell us where we want to go, which is often upward, outward, into expansion. Up, down, and out. Head up, feet or sit bones down, shoulders out, legs away…

Over Learning The Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique has been described as a reeducation technique or psycho-physical reeducation. It is also a technique to be overlearned, and not only because you learn it over other things (bad habits of either movement or stillness), but when it comes to the Alexander Technique we need to be overeducated; we need to overlearn it so that we can use it under duress, much like a musician practices over and over to be able to execute music under stress…
