Your Mother Was Wrong
There have probably been 5000 articles written with the title ‘Your Mother Was Right’, when it comes to posture. The articles imply that mothers tell their children to ‘sit up straight!’ and that’s a good thing…or is it?

Slumping can definitely be problematic. These problems may include back, neck and shoulder pain, and can diminish your breathing capacity. Slumping also may put you in a ’slumping mood’, since the mind affects the body, and the body affects the mind. Depression is associated with this type of bodily carriage.

The antidote to slumping is not to sit up straight though. That may just add additional tension to the mix. In addition, it’s hard to maintain this military posture, and you may slump worse than ever when you tire from it.

When it comes to posture, your mother may have been partly wrong. After over 100 years,  F.M. Alexander has been proven right.
