Hi Rajesh,

I think you bring up an excellent point. We are inhibiting and directing all the time. Everyone is inhibiting and directing all the time. The reason I won't give examples is that we are <em>always</em> inhibiting. Why else wouldn't we throw the computer out the window when we make a typing mistake? the Alexander Technique helps us make the unconscious conscious.

we are doing inhibition and direction.
But, we dont know that is inhibition and direction.

For example,
you are walking down the street. You seen a 'bananna fruit waste' on the ground..
What you will do?
1. Stop
2.inhibit the desire to keep foot on the bannana(inhibition)
3. Keep the step side(directing with direction)

meanswhereby(reasonings)@ if i keep my feet on the bannana waste , then i will fell down.

What other examples like this?

Thanks, Geetha. I appreciate your comments. There is a lot of ‘letting’ and allowing with the Alexander Technique. I even wrote a post about it:

Hi mark,
i loved a statement in this passage.

We should not close the eye lids forcibly.
But, we should allow them close.

Thanks Robbin,
You're right. You never know where the Alexander Technique will take you. I was hoping for Paris, or maybe Hawaii. I guess I'll have to settle for the men's room. But seriously that's a great thing you did for your student, Robbin.
I'm not sure if it matters what F.M. Alexander had in mind. <em>If</em> we believe the Alexander Technique is about helping people, then let's help them!

I love it, Marc! I have also done lessons in the bathroom. You never know where Alexander Technique will take you next! I have had students with knee pain who have a terrible time with those low toilets you often find in public restrooms. So we went into the one in my building, measured the height, re-created it using a bench in the studio, and figured out the easiest way to get in and out of a loo. Not precisely what FM Alexander had in mind, but all the same principles as getting in an out of a chair, only with less space! LOL

Thanks Robert,

Exactly. The Alexander Technique has an effect on the postural muscles Dr. Sarno is talking about. Equally as amazing is that there is proof that muscles can affect the brain both in function and <em>structure!</em>
Imagine that: As you free your neck you will be changing your brain ( altering your mood?) I was happy to be able to teach a neuroscientist last week, and he was amazed at the Alexander Technique. One of the exciting relatively new branches is embodied neuroscience-signals from the body to the brain.

Interesting and thought-provoking post Mark. The only thing I'd like to add is that recent research has clearly shown that the Alexander Technique can have a positive influence on the very postural muscles Dr. Sarno is talking about. And this research, which is on-going, is unique in that the results are not at all dependent on subjective accounts - the Technique's influence on postural tone can be measured very precisely using a testing device that has only recently become available.

You can listen to a podcast interview with one of the main researchers on this project here: http://bodylearningcast.com/muscle/ and you can read more about his studies to date here: http://alexandertechnique.com/research.htm

Hi Geetha,
I agree that the Alexander Technique directions are flowing. I also don't think one part of the body, including the brain, is more important than any other.
I think F.M. Alexander and Walter Carrington have made it clear that the body part the directions start with is the neck. You're right that the directions are one at a time, all together.

hi mark,
your explantion is correct.

but i dont think we need to start the first direction at the neck itself.

neck-->head-->torso --> neck
torso-->head-->neck-->torso-->neck

the direction is flowing and ending finally at the neck.
neck has unlimited importance in the alexander technique.

but,
i think , the chest(thoratic spine, ribcage, sternum) , lumbarspine, pelvis( sitting bones), knees are has equal importance in the alexander technique.

thinking only sitting bones means forgetting the chest, lumbar.

the neck , head poise mainly depends on the torso(back).

based on alexander principle "" a change in the body part, is a
change in the whole self""

so,

i think every part has equal value in the poise, movement and direction.

iam agreeing your sitting posture explanation.

am i correct?
