Back Pain Relief And The Alexander Technique

Can the Alexander Technique help relieve back pain? One of the faster ways to get lower back pain relief is to take a powerful pain killer. It could work quickly, and your back pain might be gone. This is one way to cope with back pain. Of course when the pill wears off the problem may return. You could take another pill, and on and on. There are side effects associated with pain medication. During a commercial on TV for one of these drugs, the spokesperson listed death as one of the side effects. Kind of defeats the purpose of the drug, no? At best these drugs are a temporary solution, which sounds to me like an oxymoron. Temporary solution? There are some other modalities, I believe, which provide temporary solutions though without the dangerous side effects.

The Alexander Technique, however, works differently. Though with Alexander Technique lessons back pain is sometimes quickly and dramatically decreased, Alexander’s simple method gets more to the root of the problem. And the root of the problem, quite often, is us and how we misuse our body. Back pain (and neck pain) is exacerbated by compressing our spines all day and all night long. We slump at out computers (like now?) slouch as we walk home, flop ourselves down to eat, then collapse in front of the TV or computer again all pretty much unconsciously. A pill, a massage, a drink may all help for a while, but if we don’t change our habits we may be dealing with the pain our whole lives.

The Alexander Technique works because it deals with changing harmful habits, including the habit of constant excess muscular tension (especially in the neck and shoulders)  leading to compression of the spine. Our repeated actions create our habits, and our habits create who we are.

One of the great aspects of the Alexander Technique is that it is a technique; a system. The positive habitual changes which happen during Alexander Technique lessons can be permanent;  sometimes quick, but permanent because we’ve changed our habit of slumping, slouching and compressing.
