picture-8Alexander Technique back pain connection.

Human beings are resilient and flexible creatures. We can get used to and adapt to almost anything, for better or worse. For example if one suffers from moderate back pain, after a while the pain feels normal; or it becomes the ‘new normal.’ If someone should ask how you’re feeling, you might say “ok” or “pretty much the same.” You feel the way you always feel. We never really know how anyone else feels because we’re not inside their body.  But if there were a way for someone to immediately inhabit your body they might be shocked (see picture). “What the hell is this?! What’s with all the back pain?”  If they knew of the Alexander Technique they might say ” please get to an Alexander Technique teacher;  your back pain is killing me!”

Our aches and pains become part of us, and sometimes they become who we are. We get used to covering up, even to ourselves. The tension and stress we put on ourselves might not be immediately noticeable because it comes on slowly.  It sneaks in under our kinesthetic radar. Sometimes even the pain sneaks in under our radar, unless it begins suddenly.

The Alexander Technique inhabits your body through the cultivation of awareness. We realize, through Alexander Technique lessons, that we have control over this tension. I didn’t know that I had control over my overly-tensed painful neck until I started working with an Alexander Technique teacher. I just thought- my neck is tense and it hurts. I didn’t know I could stop this unnecessary tensing, though it seems obvious and logical now. I didn’t have the awareness, nor the awareness that I could have the awareness.
