A New Way To Look
Do you ever notice what you look at when you’re walking outdoors?
You might notice that your gaze is down, perhaps five or six feet in front of you. It’s interesting to note your thought patterns if you’re looking at this steep angle. Maybe you’ll notice that you’re worrying about something, or replaying a past event or projecting into the future. In other words you may not be in the present moment.
See what happens as you direct your gaze farther ahead than you do habitually. (Not advisable if you’re walking on ice or banana peels) If you’re on a safer surface and you direct your gaze up a little, notice if there’s a change in attitude. Notice if ‘things are looking up.’ Notice if you’re now more in the present moment. Is there a little less collapsing and a little more lengthening, especially in the front of the spine? Is there lengthening through your upper chest and the front of your neck?
Notice a change in your your breathing, your mood, and a little release of tension around the corners of your mouth. Allow a slight smile to occur, even if there’s nothing in particular to smile at. Notice if things are looking up.
