picture-14The Alexander Technique has been described as a reeducation technique or psycho-physical reeducation. The Alexander Technique is also a technique to be overlearned, because you learn it over bad habits of either movement or stillness as the brain forms new neural pathways. Additionally, we need to overlearn the Alexander Technique so that we can use it under duress, much like a musician practices over and over to be able to execute music under stress.  As a musician, it is not enough to be able to perform at home in the comfort of your practice room or living room. You need to be able to perform when the stakes are higher, when the stress and tension is turned up.

In much the same way, the Alexander Technique needs to be overlearned in the course of Alexander Technique lessons. ‘Performing’ simple everyday acts such as standing, sitting, walking and using the computer will eventually become very easeful with the help of an Alexander Technique teacher. The challenge arises when we’re not just ‘using the computer’. When the screen contains something that really attracts us because of interest and/or work, we can get drawn in, collapsing us downward as we crane our necks towards the screen. Sound familiar?

This is where the overlearning is necessary and valuable. By focusing primarily on Alexander Technique principles and ideas during the lesson and at quieter moments at home, you increase your chances of being able to apply these principles when the stress is heightened; and the stress does get heightened.
