alexander technique jarA professor began his philosophy class by filling a large empty glass jar with golf balls. When asked, the students agreed that the jar was full.

He then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. The pebbles rolled into the space between the golf balls. Once more the professor asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

He picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. The sand filled up the rest of the space.

“Was the jar full, he asked?” Again the students responded: “Yes.”

The professor then poured two cans of beer into the jar, filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

“Now,” said the professor. “Recognize that this jar represents your life.

The golf balls represent the important things – whatever those are to you—your health, family, friends; your outlook, your pets, passions and people you love. The pebbles are the other things that matter; your job, paying rent, paying your bills. The sand is everything else, the small stuff. If you put the sand into the jar first, there will be no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.” A student asked: what about the beer? “No matter how full your life, there’s always room for a couple of beers”.
