Alexander Technique- The Damage Has Been Done

picture-62The damage has been done. When speaking of musculoskeletal problems, those are five of the most depressing, disheartening, unintentionally cruel and very often untrue words a health professional can say. The damage has been done. Translation? Give up. Get used to it. There’s nothing you can do about it. Live with it.  Next. This might not be a death sentence, but it is a pain sentence. Perpetual, enduring, persistent pain by diagnosis.

I listened to these words, pertaining to my neck, many years ago by my perspective neck surgeon. The Damage Has Been Done. He was wrong; a great surgeon perhaps, but saying this was wrong because The Damage Has Been Reversed. As an Alexander Technique teacher in NYC , part of my job is to help people reverse or prevent damage, and I see back pain, neck pain etc. minimized and eliminated all the time, every day. People get better, and better, and better. The power of the human body (and mind, and spirit) to rejuvenate is well known. People start the healing process the minute they stop hurting themselves. The Alexander Technique teaches you how to stop hurting yourself; how to stop the damage, so you can start getting better.

Sometimes people come to me because they want to improve their posture for cosmetic reasons. It’s common for people to tell me that they saw themselves in a picture or video and were unpleasantly shocked by what they saw. That was the motivating factor in coming in for Alexander Technique lessons. They may not realize that by improving their posture they may actually be preventing serious damage down the line. So, here’s five words for you: Nip it in the bud. And five more: Don’t make it worse. I know I know.  The Alexander Technique can help turn things around, so you start moving in the right direction. Five more words: Welcome to the Alexander Technique.
