Alexander Technique-How Many Lessons?
Asking a prospective teacher ‘how many lessons will I need?’ is a fair question. However, if you ask that to a piano teacher, she might answer: “to do what?” Playing chopsticks is one thing; playing a concerto is another. People ask Alexander Technique teachers that question all the time. How many lessons? The real answer is ‘no one knows’. No one knows the exact number of lessons before the pain diminishes or ends, or when a person’s posture will be ‘good’. About 100 years ago in a different world, in a different part of the world, as the only Alexander Technique Teacher in the world, Alexander said a beginning course in the Alexander Technique is 30 lessons. There are teachers who now put the number at 10, still others at 5.
To make things more confusing, it is common for someone to feel a bit better within the first few lessons; sometimes after the first. There are people who’ve asked the ‘how many lessons’ question and have gone on to become quite serious about the Alexander Technique and now have studied for years far, far after their pain has gone. (That’s my story.) Some people come for a number of sessions and stay just because they like the feeling.
