When I walked in to my first Alexander Technique lesson, my posture was horrible and I had severe neck and hand pain. (Or, I had horrible posture so I had severe neck pain!) At the time, I was thinking that I would probably have neck surgery. I had already met with my surgeon who wanted to “give it six more weeks” before we scheduled the operation. This first lesson was during those six weeks. I walked into the lesson with the hope of being cured or ‘fixed’, but walked out realizing I could ‘fix’ myself. What I was shown was absolutely logical and practical. The Alexander Technique is common sense, with a system. I had finally found my solution and my pain is long gone. (More detailed story here.)
What are you doing right now? I know, you’re probably sitting and reading this, but what are you doing with your body? Is your face poking towards the screen? This makes your neck muscles work harder than required, and you might be doing this to yourself hours a day. Is your jaw a little tight, your breathing shallow? Are you slumping? Conversely, are you now trying to sit up rigidly straight with an idea of ‘good posture?’
The Alexander Technique helps make the unconscious conscious, giving us more awareness and control. The outcome? Reduction of neck pain, back pain, improved posture, mood and other side effects.
